I’ve focused on details my entire professional life, because the fine print is so important. A seemingly small detail can unravel a transaction. But there’s the big picture, too. For me, real estate isn’t about buying or selling a home. It’s about helping people realize a life change. I grew up in the business and saw first-hand the human side of real estate. My mother ran a brokerage in New York, and I held a sales license there. After a career in corporate finance—including time as a fraud investigator and forensic accountant (how’s that for watching the details?)—I relocated to Tucson with Cathleen, my wife and business partner. We received our Arizona sales licenses at the same time and started with Long Realty on the same day. We tell people we’re not natives, but we got here as fast as we could. We also say we love the sunshine, because you don’t have to shovel it. My interest in astrophotography is a perfect metaphor for how I approach real estate. To take photographs that bring out the faint details of galaxies and nebula, you need both a close attention to detail and a clear view of the big picture. Leave out one or the other and all you’ll get is a snapshot. In a real estate transaction, ignoring details or forgetting the client’s perspective will result in a disappointed client, a rough transaction, or both. People who know me say I’m honest and very focused. I agree—honesty and integrity are very important to me. Cathleen and I always tell the truth to every client. And no surprises.
