Benefits of an Energy Efficient Home

October 4, 2012

Most people know that an energy efficient home can save you money. But how much? If you’re buying a new home and find one that’s Energy Star Qualified (Energy Star is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy) you can save between 15% and 30% on your energy usage compared to a typical new home and more compared to most resale homes. High-performance windows block ultra-violet light that damages upholstery, carpeting and paints. This too saves you the time and money required to replace these items.

There are other benefits of energy efficiency besides saving money, some of which may not be obvious at first. An important one is comfort. You’ll not have drafts, hot or cold spots-even next to the windows- in an Energy Star home. Just one even temperature throughout.

Health and safety benefits are important too. Because indoor air is filtered it reduces mold, mildew, pollens and allergens. Mold is also prevented due to building techniques that reduce unwanted water infiltration. A whole-house fan eliminates toxic gas combustion by-products.

You energy usage will have less impact on the environment because you’ll be using fewer resources like coal and gas, creating less air pollution and global warming gases. Your community benefits because less usage means fewer power plants and power lines. Since each khr of electricity produced consumes .75 gallons of water, you’ll be helping conserve our scarce water resources.

Finally, there’s the UGH factor. Because tight construction prevents outdoor air infiltration, it also keeps out unwanted bugs.
