Becoming Green Clean Minded

August 3, 2012

More and more folks are becoming aware of the potential hazards of cleaning products which affect their health and the environment. These hazards include toxic chemicals containing poisonous compounds, carcinogens, irritants to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract, and ingredients that pollute the world in which we live. Many household cleaning products have not been tested by regulating agencies thus it is uncertain how these products may affect us. Even odor neutralizing products such as sprays, aerosols, gels, oils and candles can emit harmful ingredients, causing the inside of our homes to contain more pollutants than the outside.

Due to these concerns, safe, environmentally preferable products are being developed which provide effective results. Since we all want a healthier home environment, we can decide to choose such products that are safe to use around children and pets.

You can start becoming green clean minded by reducing the use of products that contain bleach, acids, caustics, petroleum distillates, phthalates, alcohols, disinfectants, and aerosols.

Instead, chose those that have less impact on human health and the environment when compared to other products that serve the same purpose. Some of these “green products” include cleaners for glass, multi-surfaces, carpet, kitchen and bath. They feature ingredients made from renewable resources and are one hundred percent biodegradable. There are also products available containing beneficial microbes. These products have an excellent reputation for digesting odors in bathrooms, unclogging drains, and removing pet stains from carpets. For freshening the air, use products that are compliant with volatile organic compound (VOC) regulations thus reducing air pollution.
