Making Monsoon Work for You

July 1, 2018

Breathe It In

Everyone in Tucson gets excited as the clouds begin to build up around our city in anticipation of monsoon season. We welcome the much-needed rain and we stand in awe of the lightening shows nature provides to us.  Once the rains start, it feels like a big celebration!

According to experts at the Watershed Management (WMG) Group headquartered here in Tucson, if we could capture a significant portion of that rain, the Santa Cruz would be running in a number of years. What a dream to hold on to!

Utilizing rain or grey water can help green your yard, potentially save money and definitely help you to be a good steward of the planet!

Stay hydrated. Don’t leave home without your reusable water bottle and remember to actually drink it!  It’s hot out there and we need lots of water throughout the day. And if you have small children, make sure to keep them hydrated as well.

Rain Garden. Sculpt your landscape to capture the rainwater pouring off your roof or hardscape and create a lush, water-conscious yard. WMG can help you customize the style and plant palette to meet your needs and create a functional and aesthetic rain garden if you are looking for expert assistance. You can even get rain tanks to hold excess water.

Greywater to Landscape. There are ways to utilize water from your laundry, bathroom sink & shower, kitchen sink, and more for your abundant landscape! Be fruit-full and route all accessible greywater sources to 3-20 fruit trees, native plants, and more. Again, WMG can help, or you can check out DIY videos on YouTube.

Sonoran Food Forest. There are ways to build a multi-layer landscape for food production, shade, and habitat creation by integrating earthworks, soil building, greywater systems, and rain tanks. This is a much bigger but well-worth it endeavor and one which will produce ongoing positive results for those willing to take the leap.

Green Infrastructure. Turning your sunbaked street into a shady, inviting lane could be a fun neighborhood, community-building project. You can see great examples of this all over our City streets. Again, Mrs. Green highly recommends using WMG to help you plan your project to capture storm water, to irrigate shade trees and native pollinator plants and help navigate utilities and the permitting process.
