Improving your Wireless Internet Experience

February 6, 2013

Within the last several years, internet speeds have increased many times over. To keep up with technology, internet providers are finding ways to boost internet speeds, to help retain and also attract new subscribers.

Nowadays, many families have multiple members using wireless devices, to access the internet at the same time. The amount of users downloading, uploading, gaming, or just surfing the internet at any one time, can determine how fast and pleasant a users experience is. Although a fast internet connection helps, sometimes, it is just a matter of having a good wireless signal.

There are many different variables that control strength of signal, such as type of interior a home has i.e.(block, brick or sheetrock), if there are multiple levels to the house, and most importantly, the size and area of coverage. With this in mind, there are a few things that can be done to optimize signal.

Make sure the router is central to all areas needing coverage. If this is not possible, try to install the router closer to areas most being used i.e.(kitchen, family room, master bedroom). In multiple level areas, install the router on the bottom floor, as the wireless signal tends to emit out and upwards.

Most setups are different and the quality of wireless signal and amount needed often depends on the devices being used. Sometimes, it is necessary to have a wireless extender to boost the signal across the house, or an extra router, positioned in a different area of the home. Whatever the need may be, there is more than likely a simple solution. With a little trial and error and a basic understanding of how a router works, improving your wireless internet experience can be painless.
