How to Prevent Mold after Water Damage

April 2, 2013

If you’ve experienced a water leak or flood in your home, you may understand the urgency in drying the building to prevent mold. After a water intrusion occurs there is a 72 hour window of opportunity to prevent the potential of mold growth.

Mold prevention is simply “mitigation of the damage” in a quick and responsive manner. This begins with the homeowner discovering the water damage, quickly determining the cause, and repairing the problem. At this point, many people will attempt to get the plumbing problem resolved first when the appropriate thing to do is to begin the drying process. Always be sure to shut the water off to the house. Mitigating the loss is an insurance term in your policy that says you are responsible to do everything in your power to lessen or contain the damage. This includes calling a licensed restoration company, such as Abracadabra Restoration. Once you have contacted us and scheduled a visit, it is time to do your part to alleviate the possibility of mold growth in your home. There are some molds that are known to have caused respiratory problems and other illnesses. These types are more prevalent in slow drying wet areas. First, if the carpet is soaked, try to pick up all personal items from the floor that would add to your loss by being wet such as shoes, leather products, paper products, linens, etc. If they are wet, spread them out in the garage or some other dry area. Abracadabra Restoration will help you with any wet items when we arrive. Do not throw anything away! If possible, take photos to document the damage. This is particularly helpful if you file an insurance claim. Next, try to either move furniture out of the wet area or lift it up and put something under the legs such as a block of wood that will keep it out of the water. Quick work on this will prevent many added expenses and costs later, not to mention the prevention of mold. In addition, always leave someone in charge of your home if you are away for more that 2-3 days. This way, if any water damage occurs, you will be notified quickly and can begin the process from wherever you are at the moment.

Remember to call Abracadabra Restoration as soon as the leak or flood is discovered to begin the drying process. If mold growth does occur, don’t worry, we offer free inspections and have proven methods to remove the mold. We also have new financing options available that allow the homeowner to finance any unexpected costs. As Long Advantage Partners, we offer a 10% discount up to $1000. Please feel free to give us a call if you have any additional questions about preventing mold growth. Happy Spring!
