Cozy Home - Safe Home… Heating Season Tips

Heating Season Tips

Follow these simple tips to keep your family safe and cozy all winter long…

Have a full furnace maintenance performed by a qualified service professional. A complete maintenance service will clean and check all of the important safety functions of your furnace. This will include the burners and heat exchanger while checking for any leaks that could allow potential dangerous carbon monoxide to enter your home. Maintenance is also required by all manufacturers for the preservation of your equipment warranty so be sure to keep you service records.

Install a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm in your home. Your technician should have them on their truck. However, it’s a good idea to mention it when setting your appointment.

Keep the area around your furnace room clean and unobstructed. NEVER store cleaning products or other combustible materials in or near your furnace.

If it is making funny sounds during start up or simply not operating normally shut it off and schedule a service call as soon as possible!

Change your filters monthly. A dirty filter can increase energy cost and damage your equipment, leading to more repairs and early failure. A simple reminder is to change your filter each month when you receive your utility bill.

Some money savings tips:

  • Set your thermostat to the lowest comfortable temperature.
  • Install a programmable thermostat, automatically lowering your thermostat setting while you are gone.
  • Humidity helps the air feel warmer. Whole house humidifiers are a great benefit in addition to watering plants, cooking etc.
  • Keep your drapes and shades on south facing walls open, allowing sunlight into your home.

Careful operation and maintenance of equipment can keep your family cozy and safe all winter!
