Dont Let Your A/C Break The Bank

May 2, 2013

Summer heat is here and you’ll soon be reaching for the thermostat! Follow these tips to save money and headaches with your air conditioner…

Don’t put off your maintenance... Our air conditioners run more hours per year than our cars! Your system needs to be maintained regularly by a trained professional to keep it running efficiently! Putting off maintenance means higher operating cost, more expensive repairs and shorter life. Plus, manufacturers now require planned maintenance to keep your warranties valid! Look into a planned maintenance program. You won’t have to remember your maintenance (they should contact you). Ever need a repair? Go to the top of the list (a nice benefit). Plus you’ll also get special discounts and other perks.

Change your filter regularly... This is not the place to save money! Filters are cheap insurance and dirty filters can cause expensive repairs. We recommend monthly filter changes. Use at least a 1” pleated filter like the type found at your local Ace Hardware. Buy enough for a 6 month supply. You’re more likely to change them if they are available. Also, throw away those fancy “electrostatic” filters (not to be confused with electronic filters) they plug up fast and can cause damage to your equipment.

Set your thermostat back, not off... When you are leaving for more than a few hours, turn your thermostat up about 3 degrees. Leave it alone for shorter trips. Don’t ever turn it off. You will use more energy cooling a house back down than if you raise the temperature up just 3 degrees.

Close your drapes... Closing your drapes (especially on the sunny side) helps keep the heat outside. A cooler house uses less energy.

Look and Listen... You already have a good idea if your system is operating normally. Are you hearing funny noises? Is your unit running longer trying to keep the house cool? Get it checked by a professional… now. With air conditioners, one problem can cause another and so on. Avoiding a service call can result in more expensive repairs and shorter system life.

Need a repair, use a reputable company... I know it’s tempting to use your friend’s friend. However, air conditioners have become more sophisticated and require the right tools, training and parts to keep them operating properly and efficiently. The reputable companies have the necessary resources to deliver trained technicians to fix your system right. Using an authorized service company will also protect your manufacturer’s warranties.

Follow these tips and it will be money in the bank!
