Located nine miles from downtown Phoenix, Tempe’s central location has easy access to an extensive freeway and highway network, with close proximity to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. This "All American City" is a great place to experience the best in entertainment, professional and college sports, active recreation and prime shopping. Home of Arizona State University, Tempe has a strong and diversified economy. Old Town Tempe boasts boutiques, restaurants and shops showcased in restored historical buildings. The university plays an important role in contributing to Tempe's considerable educational and cultural resources. Tempe got its name in 1879 by a visiting Englishman who was reminded of the Vale of Tempe in ancient Greece when he saw the area's wide river and nearby expanse of green fields. The city has 43 parks, including Kiwanis Community Park, home of the world's second largest indoor/outdoor wave pool.

Activities and Attractions

Tempe is known for its variety of events and festivals throughout the year. The Fiesta Bowl Block Party is a New Year's Eve celebration with more than 40 bands, fireworks, and a carnival. The annual spring and fall Festival of the Arts draws nearly 200,000 people to downtown Tempe. Other annual events include the Way Out West Oktoberfest, Spring Pow Wow Competition, Fantasy of Lights, Fiesta Bowl Football Classic, Thanksgiving Soccer Tournament, and the Arizona Special Olympics Games. Downtown Tempe is a regional entertainment center in an historic setting with live music, restaurants, boutiques, cafes, theater and film. Tempe also is home to the NFL's Arizona Cardinals and ASU's Sun Devils, and host to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and Anaheim Angels for spring training.
